Built in 1937, the atom smasher was an integral piece of cutting edge nuclear physics research conducted here at the Westinghouse Research Laboratory campus. In 1958 this particular atom smasher was decommissioned in favor of more powerful particle accelerators, but it remained the most visible representation of the atomic age here in western PA. Westinghouse Atom Smasher. The Atom Smasher (the world's first Industrial Van de Graaff generator) was built by Westinghouse Research Labs in 1937. Five million volts produced by the generator were used to bombard atoms with high energy electrons, creating nuclear reactions. The Westinghouse atom smasher is an iconic relic from the very dawn of the atomic age. Very few such machines or artifacts remain.

Built in 1937, the Westinghouse Atom Smasher in Forest Hills, PA (the large, bulb-shaped structure on the right) paved the way for researching nonmilitary uses for nuclear energy. It was mothballed in 1958, and when I photographed it in 2013 there was hope to preserve the structure as part of a school. Two years later, however, it was torn down. Nearly half a century after its construction in 1937, the Westinghouse Atom Smasher was dedicated as an IEEE Electrical Engineering Milestone in a ceremony held in Pittsburgh, PA, on May 29, 1985.
