Marine Species Identification Portal : Idotea chelipes. (Pallas, 1766) Description: Body slender. Antenna 1 extending well beyond article 3 of the peduncle of antenna 2; there is a single large aesthetasc, not a pair, at the distal end of the aesthetasc series on the antenna 1. Antenna 2 flagellum longer than the peduncle, about a quarter of the populations of I. chelipes were genetically distinct from populations outside the Baltic Sea, differentiation was ten times lower than in the other two species. Distribution patterns over the past 150 years, showed fairly constant large-scale distributions for the Idotea spp., but changes in distribution could be found. I. I. chelipes is a species of brackish water, being found in algae in estuaries and stream mouths and in brackish pools. It has been recorded on eastern British shores from the Humber southwards, and on southern and western coasts as far north as Shetland.

Idotea viridis (Slabber, 1778) described, but only three of these species exist in the Baltic. Sea: Idotea balthica ( Pallas, 1772) (BA), Idotea chelipes. (Pallas, 1766) (CH) and Idotea granulosa  Idotea chelipes is about 5 times as long as broad with coxal plates deeply indented, pleotelson vaulted, and apex tapering to a blunt point.
